ESL Graduation 2006

Claire Morgan, ESL Coordinator, wrote the following article on Nuestra Casa's ESL Graduation for EPA Today.

On May 25th, the Nuestra Casa English as a Second Language Program held its annual graduation celebration. One-hundred adult graduates (all Latino immigrants) received certificates for attending English classes during the 2005/06 school year. The event was attended by nearly 250 members of the community, including the proud children and other family and friends of the graduates. Guests visited the colorful Expo of student projects and enjoyed the speeches and skits presented by each ESL class. Before presenting the graduation certificates, the Nuestra Casa ESL Program Coordinator recognized the graduates for their dedicated efforts to attend the two-hour classes three times per week, despite their very busy work schedules and family commitments. Over the year, the students increased their self-confidence and made significant progress toward reaching their goals for learning English. In their own words:

“When I started to take the English classes I felt shy because I can’t understand the people who speak in English. Right now, I’m more confident in myself when I listen and speak this language.”

“I feel very happy when I come to school to learn English. Now I can read short stories and I like this feeling. I feel very proud of me.”

“I am not so young; still, I come to study English. I realize that English is very important. It doesn’t matter how old we are. I feel very happy and now I regret that I did not start earlier in life. I love my English class.”

“I am learning how to communicate in this new society and I am able to help my son with his homework. I come to class for my son (he is my inspiration) and for me.”

“In Mexico I didn’t have the opportunity to go to school, so now I want to learn a second language, English, and I saw that here we have the opportunity to have a better life.”

“Thanks to this program, I am able to understand English. This program has also helped me to understand the society. We Latinos suffer a lot to adapt to everything—language is only one part. I want to learn and work and help my family.”

“I came here with a dream to learn English, study for a career, get a good job, and have my own things. I am learning how to speak, how to write, and a lot of things. Nuestra Casa Celebra su Segundo Evento Anual de Graduación
El 25 de mayo, el Programa de Inglés para Adultos de Nuestra Casa tuvo su anual celebración de graduación. Cien alumnos (todos Latinos inmigrantes) recibieron certificados por asistir a las clases de inglés durante el año escolar 2005/06. Casi 250 miembros de la comunidad asistieron al evento, incluso los orgullosos niños y otros familiares y amigos de los graduados. Los invitados miraron la exposición de proyectos hechos por los participantes del programa y escucharon las presentaciones de cada clase de inglés. Antes de entregar los certificados, la Coordinadora del Programa de Inglés reconoció a los graduados por sus dedicados esfuerzos al asistir a las clases tres veces a la semana, a pesar de sus horarios de trabajo y sus compromisos familiares. Durante el año, los alumnos aumentaron su confianza y progresaron mucho hacía sus metas del aprender inglés. En sus propias palabras:

“Cuando empecé a asistir a las clases de inglés, me sentía penoso porque no podía entender a la gente que hablaba inglés. Ahora tengo más confianza cuando escucho y hablo este idioma.”

“Me siento muy feliz cuando vengo a la escuela para estudiar inglés. Ahora puedo leer cuentos y me gusta este sentimiento. Me siento muy orgullosa de mi.”

“No estoy tan joven, mas vengo a estudiar inglés. Me he dado cuento de que el inglés es muy importante. No importa la edad que tengamos. Estoy contenta y lamento que no empecé antes. Me encanta mi clase de inglés.”

“Estoy aprendiendo a comunicar en esta nueva sociedad y puedo ayudar a mi hijo con sus tareas. Por mi hijo vengo a la clase (el es mi inspiración) y por mi también.”

“En México no tuve la oportunidad de estudiar, así que ahora quiero aprender un segundo idioma, inglés, y vi que aquí tenemos la oportunidad de mejorar la vida.”

“Gracias a este programa puedo entender inglés. Este programa también me ha ayudado a entender la sociedad. Nosotros los Latinos sufrimos mucho al adaptarnos a todo—el idioma essolo una parte. Quiero aprender y trabajar y ayudar a mi familia.”

“Yo vine aquí con el sueño de estudiar inglés, sacar una carrera, conseguir un buen trabajo, y tener mis propias cosas. Estoy aprendiendo a hablar, a escribir, y muchas cosas.
